Montalbano: It is located at an altitude of 440 to 470 metres above sea level, in the municipality of Boca. It consists of more than 10 small plots (approx. 1000-2000 m2 each) of old vines in the 'Maggiorina' system with a total area of 1.5 ha in the Montalbano area. The area at the top is very steep and terraced, the varieties consist of Croatina 70%, Nebbiolo 10%, Vespolina 10%, and 10 other native varieties including white grapes such as Erbaluce and Malvasia di Boca. Further we have other 5 Maggiorina vineyards in Le Piane, Santuario and Traversagna area of 1ha. The grapes are used for the 'Maggiorina' wine and from a selection of the highest and steepest vineyards for the 'Piane' wine.

Since 2010 we have been working with Anna Schneider of the Agricultural University of Turin on a recovery of old plants and varieties in the old 'Maggiorina' vineyards to protect the biodiversity still existing in Boca. The first plants of this selection were planted in the new vineyard at 'Traversagna'.

Maggiorina: historic heritage

We are proud to keep alive this ancient planting heritage, which probably dates back to before the Romans. Novara's wine-growing heritage goes back thousands of years and is recorded in Pliny the Elder's 'Storia naturalis' (23-79 AD). For hundreds of years, the traditional 'Maggiorina' system was the only way of cultivation in Boca: three vines spread out at the four cardinal points, forming the 'Maggiorino' square. Over the centuries there have been various modifications, the last being made by the architect Antonelli (designer of the Mole Antonelliana and the Boca Sanctuary), a native of Maggiora, one of the municipalities of BOCA DOC. All the plants that survived the collapse of the 1950s had been planted from 1910-1920 (after phylloxera) and are still productive and in good health today. Their fruit is of great quality, although of low quantity. This planting has undergone many small variations over the centuries until it became perfect for manual work.

This teaches us that we can still, despite being considered outdated in modern agriculture, work our new row plants more and more manually, preserving the historicity of those who worked before us in this beautiful reality that is Boca.
